Major Shake-Up Looms As Senate Proposes Single Six-Year Term For President, Governors
Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele has revealed plans to introduce a bill proposing a single six-year tenure for presidents and state governors after the 2027 general elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to him, the proposed legislation is designed to replace the current system, which allows elected leaders to serve a maximum of two four-year terms.
Bamidele said the bill would be among the first pieces of legislation he intends to sponsor when the next Senate is inaugurated.
He explained that the proposal is aimed at improving governance by eliminating the distractions associated with re-election campaigns and political calculations.
The Senate Leader argued that under the existing arrangement, many elected officials begin planning for a second term shortly after assuming office, often at the expense of effective governance.
Under the proposed framework, presidents and governors would serve a single six-year term with no opportunity for re-election.
According to Bamidele, such a system would enable leaders to focus entirely on delivering their mandates without the pressure of seeking another term in office.
He maintained that knowing they have only one term to serve would encourage office holders to maximise their time and concentrate on achieving measurable results from the outset.
Bamidele acknowledged that the proposal may generate differing opinions, but stressed that lawmakers have a responsibility to advance ideas they believe can strengthen governance and deepen democratic practice.
He also noted that legislation and constitutional provisions should evolve in response to changing societal needs and emerging realities.
If eventually introduced and passed by the National Assembly, the proposal would require constitutional amendments before it can take effect.
