During a memorial event on Thursday, Makinde announced that suspects linked to the incident are already in custody and facing terrorism charges.
“As a government, we have taken steps to prosecute those responsible for this unfortunate incident. They are currently in prison and undergoing trial for terrorism,” he stated.
Relief and Reconstruction Efforts
The governor unveiled a relief disbursement committee, comprising residents of the affected area and representatives from professional organizations, including the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Nigerian Bar Association, and Nigeria Union of Journalists. The committee has been tasked with developing a framework to distribute financial aid to victims.
Makinde also disclosed plans to rebuild the affected area, adding that contracts have been awarded to repair roads in the vicinity.
“The government will soon begin the process of rebuilding the affected area,” he said.
The Tragic Explosion
The explosion occurred during an African Cup of Nations match, triggered by stockpiled explosives that detonated in a residential building on Dejo Oyelese Close, Adeyi Avenue. The blast caused widespread panic across Ibadan, left five people dead, and destroyed nearby buildings. Emergency responders and security agencies intervened swiftly to manage the crisis.
Preventing Future Tragedies
Makinde stressed the need for public cooperation in preventing similar incidents, urging residents to report suspicious activities to security agencies.
“This tragedy could have been avoided if people who noticed individuals storing explosives in residential areas had alerted security operatives. Lives were lost, homes were destroyed, and disruptions occurred unnecessarily,” he said.
He emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing security across the state and called on residents to support these efforts.
“As a government, we are doing everything possible to ensure safety. But we need citizen cooperation. If you see something, say something, and the authorities will act,” Makinde added.
The governor offered prayers for the victims’ souls, comforted their families, and promised to work towards a safer and more secure Oyo State for all residents.
