Man Remanded For Allegedly Refusing To Pay For Burukutu, Pepper Soup

In Adamawa State, a driver named David Donald has been placed in custody at a correctional center in Yola for allegedly consuming a significant amount of the local beer known as burukutu and refusing to settle the bill. The accused, who is originally from Karin Lamido in Taraba State, faced charges of cheating and appeared before the Ibrahim Musa-led Upper Area Court 4 in Yola, where he pleaded guilty to the offence as per Section 302 of the Penal Code Law.

The incident occurred on February 21, 2024, at a local establishment in Yola, where David ordered five plastic buckets of burukutu and two plates of fish pepper soup. After indulging in the beverages and food, he attempted to leave without paying, leading to his apprehension and subsequent handover to the police.

Sergeant Kabiru Abubakar, the prosecuting police officer, informed the court that the defendant deceitfully consumed burukutu and fish pepper soup with a total value of N6,600 from Felicity Sunday and Linda Ali. The complainants reported the matter to the police, accusing David of refusing to settle the incurred bills. Consequently, the court issued a remand order, detaining the accused at the correctional center pending further legal proceedings.
