Managing Electoral Loss: A Call For Responsible Opposition In Edo StateByAdolphus Arebanmhen Aletor FCA, MCIBThe recent declaration of Senator Monday Okpebholo as the winner of the Edo State September 21, 2024 election has been met with unwarranted antagonism from some members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) acting in opposition. Rather than acknowledging the democratic process and respecting the outcome, they have chosen to condemn every step and policy decision of the new government. This behaviour is not only unbecoming but also detrimental to the progress of Edo State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HEREā¶
Electoral loss can be emotionally draining, and managing it requires a thoughtful and reflective approach. Rather than blaming the electoral body, those acting in opposition should introspect and identify areas for improvement, which in the case of the Edo elections for instance, can be attributed to internal crisis, leadership choices, and the will of the voters, rather than solely blaming the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Responsible opposition in a democracy refers to the constructive and respectful role played by opposition parties, groups, or individuals in holding the ruling party or government accountable for their actions, policies, and decisions. However, the current behaviour of some PDP members is far from responsible. Their actions are driven by a desire to undermine the new government rather than to contribute to the betterment of the state.
The previous administration of Mr Godwin Obaseki had eight years to make a positive impact on the people of Edo State. Unfortunately, they lost their people-centric focus when they attempted to extricate themselves from the influence of leaders. This lack of accountability and mentorship made the administration unpopular.
The prolonged altercation between the past governor and his deputy was a significant factor in their failure. It is disheartening to see the same individuals who prompted this altercation and the desire for self mentorship now making inflammatory statements against the government of Senator Okpebholo and Hon. Dennis Idahosa.
Senator Okpebholo, during his campaign, promised to run a government that recognises elders and mentors and to subject himself to the mentorship of party leaders. His recent policy thrust has only confirmed his promises in this regard, as well as in other developmental issues.
No society thrives in chaos. Enduring development can only be achieved through peace and harmony. The people of Edo State deserve better than the destructive behaviour being exhibited by some of these people. It is crucial that they manage their loss responsibly and work towards the betterment of the state.
It is important to mention that bloggers and influencers watch their utterances and refrain from amplifying unconfirmed stories that can create chaos. Their responsible behaviour can contribute significantly to the peaceful coexistence of the people of Edo State.
The opposition’s behaviour towards the administration of the distinguished senator Monday Okpebholo is demeaning. Rather than antagonizing every step and policy decision, they should focus on providing constructive criticism and contributing to the development of the state. The people of Edo State deserve responsible leadership, and it is time for the opposition to put aside their differences and work towards the betterment of the state. By doing so, they can ensure that Edo State continues to thrive and grow. End.
