Manchester United Fine Lisandro Martínez After Explosive Criticism Of Club’s Leadership
Manchester United have reportedly fined defender Lisandro Martínez for publicly criticising the club’s leadership following their Champions League defeat to Atlético Madrid on Tuesday.
According to Bush Radio Academy, citing football transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, the club imposed the punishment after the Argentina international questioned Manchester United’s summer recruitment strategy and accused the hierarchy of failing to provide head coach Michael Carrick with enough quality options.
Martínez specifically expressed disappointment with technical director Jason Wilcox, saying he had “expected more” from him, while also suggesting that members of the club’s board should accept responsibility for the team’s struggles.
Romano disclosed on Friday, October 16, that Manchester United had fined the 28-year-old defender and considered the matter resolved.
“Manchester United have fined Lisandro Martínez as punishment and consider the case now closed,” Romano reportedly wrote.
He added that Martínez had held discussions with Carrick and the club’s directors to clarify his comments and apologise.
Reports indicated that the defender attended a meeting at the club’s Carrington training ground with Carrick, Wilcox, chief executive Omar Berrada and other senior officials. The discussions were described as positive.
Following the meeting, Martínez issued a public apology on social media, acknowledging that his frustration after the defeat had influenced his remarks.
He explained that the conversation with the club’s leadership and manager had provided an opportunity for an open exchange of views about the incident.
“Everyone knows that I am a passionate person and that I live football with great intensity. The frustration of the defeat led me to express how I felt at a time and place that perhaps were not the right ones, and for that I want to apologise,” Martínez said.
The defender also acknowledged that his comments had not helped the club maintain unity at a difficult moment.
“Our club is at its best when we are all united, and I recognise that my words in that moment did not help with that,” he added.
Martínez further stressed that everyone at Manchester United was working towards the same objective of restoring the club to success, adding that the team would now focus on moving forward together.
Although the reported fine’s exact amount has not been disclosed, the club is understood to regard the issue as closed following the discussions and apology.
The incident has highlighted tensions surrounding Manchester United’s recruitment strategy and performances, with Martínez’s initial comments raising questions about the squad’s depth and the support available to Carrick.
