Manchester United Refuse To Budge On Casemiro Future Amid Contract Debate

The 34-year-old midfielder confirmed in January that he would depart Old Trafford once his £350,000-per-week contract ends. Although he has produced a series of strong performances recently, the club has opted not to renew his deal. He will therefore become a free agent.

United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe had previously raised concerns about Casemiro’s £18.2 million yearly salary, as the club continues efforts to reduce spending and restructure the squad.

The decision not to activate the extension clause was made early to provide clarity and support the club’s long-term rebuilding strategy. Casemiro reportedly agreed to make the situation public to avoid speculation as the season progressed.

Despite the exit plan, the Brazilian has impressed in recent matches.

He opened the scoring against Aston Villa on Sunday, registering his seventh goal of the season — six of which have come from headers. After finding the net, he celebrated in front of the Stretford End, repeatedly pointing to the club badge. Supporters responded with chants of “One more year, Casemiro,” repeating their plea at full-time as he headed down the tunnel.

Club captain Bruno Fernandes and defender Leny Yoro both expressed hope that he would remain at the club following the match.

However, reports indicate that United’s stance remains unchanged.

Interim head coach Michael Carrick suggested the matter is settled.

“Once a decision is made, it becomes clearer for everyone involved,” Carrick said.

“He has had a tremendous impact, both through his leadership and important contributions in big moments, including goals.

“There was a nice moment with the fans at the end. He will certainly appreciate that.”
