Martinez Breaks Silence, Questions Man United Hierarchy Over Failure To Strengthen Squad
Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has criticised the club’s hierarchy over its recruitment strategy, insisting that more investment was needed after the team secured Champions League qualification.
Martinez expressed his frustration following United’s 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid on Tuesday, a result that extended the English club’s winless run to five matches and intensified scrutiny of head coach Michael Carrick and the club’s management.
United finished third in the Premier League last season to return to the Champions League after a three-year absence. However, Martinez believes the club’s leadership should have done more to strengthen the squad ahead of competing against Europe’s top teams.
Speaking to Amazon Prime, the Argentine defender said he expected greater investment from the club’s technical director, Jason Wilcox, stressing that the team needed additional quality to compete at the highest level.
Martinez acknowledged that the players also had a responsibility to improve their performances but argued that criticism should not focus exclusively on the manager and those on the pitch.
He questioned the club’s tendency to change managers without addressing other areas he believes require improvement, suggesting that the problems at Old Trafford extend beyond the coaching staff.
Manchester United spent £155 million on three midfielders during the summer transfer window but did not recruit additional striking support for Benjamin Sesko or another left-back to compete with Luke Shaw.
Minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and chief executive Omar Berrada were present at the Metropolitano Stadium to watch United’s defeat to Atletico Madrid.
However, former United captain Wayne Rooney criticised Martinez for expressing his concerns publicly, warning that such comments could undermine unity within the dressing room.
Rooney suggested that although Martinez might have intended to speak on behalf of his teammates, he had handled the situation poorly by airing his frustrations in public.
The disagreement has added to the pressure surrounding Manchester United as the club seeks to improve its performances and address concerns over its recruitment decisions and overall direction.
According to Bush Radio Academy, Martinez’s comments have intensified the debate over whether Manchester United’s struggles stem primarily from performances on the pitch, the club’s recruitment strategy or broader issues within its leadership.
