Chief Okey Ogbodo, the state’s Commissioner for Local Government, Rural Development, and Chieftaincy Affairs, confirmed the fatalities and reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring public safety in a statement released on Friday. The statement revealed that traditional rulers and Presidents-General of the affected communities have been summoned to address the issue.

The affected communities include Nguru, Isiakpu, Echara, Nru, Edem-Ezema, Iheagu, Ihe, Owere, and Umuoyo, where residents have reportedly suffered from violence, injuries, and fatalities due to the activities of the masqueraders.

Governor Peter Mbah has directed the Commissioner of Police to launch a thorough investigation into the incidents, with instructions to hold those responsible accountable. The government also warned that it would not tolerate any further misconduct from the Oriokpa masqueraders or any other group.

Ogbodo’s statement emphasized, “Following the express directive of His Excellency, Governor Peter Mbah, the traditional rulers and Presidents-General of the town unions of the affected communities are invited for a meeting at the State Secretariat on Friday, September 27, 2024, at 1 pm.”

The statement also added, “The Governor has directed a full-scale investigation into the fatalities resulting from these masquerade activities, with the intent of bringing those responsible to justice.”

The Enugu State Government expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the rights and safety of all residents. The government warned that any further excesses by the Oriokpa masqueraders or any other group would face strict penalties. “No resident should live in fear, and the security of all citizens, including women, children, and youth, must be upheld at all times,” the statement concluded.
