As the 2027 general elections draw closer, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is said to be consolidating his political influence across the South, buoyed by a wave of defections from opposition governors and prominent political figures to the ruling party.
However, the growing trend has sparked concerns over Nigeria sliding into a one-party state, with opposition figures strongly criticizing the mass defections.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, have both dismissed the defections as acts of political desperation and self-preservation.
Earlier in the week, Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah defected from the PDP to the APC alongside members of his State Executive Council. Within 24 hours, Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri also announced his resignation from the PDP, joined by Speaker Abraham Ingobere and 21 members of the Bayelsa House of Assembly.
According to sources quoted by The Punch, more defections are imminent, particularly from the South, as the APC intensifies its efforts to consolidate control ahead of 2027.
Insiders revealed that Fubara and Otti are already in advanced talks to join the ruling party, while Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang and Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas are reportedly preparing to align with Tinubu’s political camp.
A senior APC chieftain disclosed, “The APC is attracting them all. Talks are ongoing with PDP governors from the South, including Abia, Rivers, and even Diri, who recently left the PDP. This momentum will soon spread to the North, as some governors from the North-Central and North-East are also finalizing discussions to join the APC.”
Another insider added, “The goal is to weaken the PDP’s influence nationwide. Negotiations with the Taraba and Plateau governors are progressing, and it’s only a matter of time before they officially cross over.”
