Mass Killings In Katsina: Civil Group Seeks Action, Touts Self-Defence As Last Resort

The National Coalition Against Mass Killings, Mob Action, Extra-Judicial Killings and Impunity has strongly denounced a violent episode in Kurfi Local Government Area of Katsina State, where villagers allegedly lynched and killed dozens of suspected bandits and kidnappers.

Reacting to the gruesome events in Kurfi Local Government, the National Coalition Against Mass Killings, Mob Action, Extra-Judicial Killings and Impunity expressed deep concern over villagers reportedly killing and mutilating suspected bandits. While acknowledging the torment inflicted on rural Nigerians by criminal gangs, the group warned that self-defence must never morph into brutal mob justice.

It condemned the inhumane treatment of alleged criminals, stating that such actions grossly violate the Nigerian Constitution and international human rights laws. Citing Section 33, the coalition affirmed that self-defence is only lawful when it is necessary, measured, and proportionate—not when it descends into barbaric retribution.

The coalition faulted the Nigerian security apparatus for its failure to protect citizens, which it said has bred public distrust and chaos. It called on the Inspector-General of Police to launch a full investigation into the Kurfi incident and restore order.

The group also demanded that communities be educated on the legal boundaries of self-defence, warning that lawless retaliation will only deepen the cycle of violence. It urged respect for human life under all circumstances and insisted that even alleged criminals deserve a fair trial—not execution by mobs.

The coalition vowed to monitor developments and called on the National Human Rights Commission, Ministry of Justice, and civil society to press for justice, accountability, and a shift in public consciousness toward lawful conduct.
