Tragically, a team sent to deliver the ransom discovered Bawa’s body. A video showing the 74-year-old pleading for his release had circulated widely before his death.

In a statement from the Ministry of Defence’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Henshaw Ogubike, Matawalle denounced Bawa’s killing and instructed the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Christopher Musa, to investigate and apprehend those responsible.

Matawalle described the murder as senseless and unacceptable, emphasizing that it will not be tolerated. He directed the CDS to ensure a thorough investigation and bring the culprits to justice.

Reaffirming President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to security, Matawalle assured the public of the Armed Forces’ dedication to resolving the case and securing the nation. He also extended his condolences to Bawa’s family, the people of Gatawa, and the Sokoto State Government.
