In a statement released by Bimbo Oladeji, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), it was confirmed that the initial burst of two rear gear tyres led to the remaining two tyres also bursting while the aircraft was taxiing off the runway. Fortunately, there were no injuries or fatalities reported.

Oladeji’s statement detailed, “During the takeoff roll, a loud bang was heard, identified as the bursting of the rear gear tyres. Initially, two tyres burst. While attempting to taxi off the runway, the remaining two tyres also burst, rendering the aircraft completely disabled.”

A go-team, headed by NSIB Director General Captain Alex Badeh Jr., is scheduled to visit the incident site for further investigation.

In a related incident in 2023, the NSIB had previously criticized Max Air for overwriting the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) data following a serious incident at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. The report highlighted issues concerning compliance with aviation safety directives and operational procedures.

The aircraft involved in the recent incident, identified as Boeing 737 with registration 5N-ADB, has been grounded pending investigation into the cause of the tyre bursts.
