Messi, who led Inter Miami to victory in the MLS Cup on Sunday, December 7, has reportedly made it clear that he envisions returning to Barcelona—the city where he became a global football icon—once his playing career concludes.
Although Messi’s contract with Inter Miami runs through 2028, Beckham revealed that the 38-year-old already has a clear picture of his post-retirement life. Speaking to Marca, Beckham said he had hoped Messi might consider staying in the United States after hanging up his boots.
“I would like Messi to live in Miami after he retires. But Leo told me he only thinks about living near the Camp Nou,” Beckham said.
The former England captain emphasized Messi’s unparalleled connection with Barcelona, noting, “There is no player who loves Barcelona as much as he does. You can see the Barca logo on his leg and even on his water bottle.”
Messi, widely expected to retire following the 2026 FIFA World Cup, has enjoyed a transformative spell in Major League Soccer since joining Inter Miami in 2023 from Paris Saint-Germain. His arrival has revitalized the club both on and off the field, drawing international attention to MLS and significantly boosting Inter Miami’s commercial profile.
