Speaking on behalf of the Forum, MBF National President Bitrus Pogu stressed the importance of a comprehensive review of the bills to ensure they effectively tackle the country’s socio-economic challenges.
In an interview with Punch, Pogu said, “When only one aspect of an issue is considered without a holistic view, it’s likely to lead to problems. This is the issue with those opposing the tax reform bills. Their main concern lies in the revenue-sharing aspect, which the bills appear to align with revenue generation. I believe this is where the disagreement stems from. In Nigeria, we tend to want benefits without contributing enough. For years, we’ve been overly reliant on oil, a resource that is finite, but still coming from somewhere.”
The four tax bills currently before the National Assembly include the Nigeria Tax Bill 2024, aimed at setting the country’s fiscal framework for taxation. Another key piece, the Tax Administration Bill, seeks to establish a legal framework for taxation and reduce disputes. The Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill would replace the Federal Inland Revenue Service Act, creating a new Nigeria Revenue Service. Additionally, the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill proposes the creation of a tax tribunal and tax ombudsman to resolve disputes and improve tax administration.
