Military Leader Rejects Coup Rumors, Emphasizes Need For Strong Leadership

Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, affirmed on Tuesday that his personnel fully embrace the democratic system of government in Nigeria and have no intentions of undermining it.

Lagbaja characterized the members of the Nigerian Army under his command as staunch supporters of democracy, responding to recent coup allegations circulating amidst the backdrop of military takeovers in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger Republic.

Despite the prevailing coup speculations, the military has consistently denied any such plans during various instances.

Addressing a seminar for Nigerian Army officers in Abuja, Lagbaja emphasized the Army’s commitment to upholding the constitution, assuring that soldiers would faithfully execute their duties as outlined in the constitutional mandates.

He stated, “Permit me to emphasize that the Armed Forces of Nigeria, particularly the Nigerian Army, has embraced democracy as the chosen system of governance for our country. We are unequivocally agents of democracy and harbor no intentions of subverting it.”

Lagbaja further assured that the Nigerian Army would persist in defending the constitution, pledging not to suspend it for any reason. He underscored the importance of elected leaders leading while the military fulfills its constitutional responsibilities.

In a call for professionalism and adherence to duty, Lagbaja asserted, “Nigerian Army personnel must, therefore, remain professional and uphold the highest standards as they carry out their constitutional obligations.”
