Idris, who made the announcement on his X page, stated that the vehicles fulfilled his promise to the lawmakers and expressed gratitude for their dedication and commitment.
“I am honored to fulfill my promise by distributing 24 First Class Toyota Jeeps to the dedicated members of the Kebbi State House of Assembly for their official engagements,” Idris wrote.
However, Nigerians on X have criticized the governor for spending money on extravagances despite Nigeria’s current economic conditions.
FIJ spoke with a car dealer who identified the vehicle given to the lawmakers as the Toyota Fortuner, with models ranging between 2016 and 2018. The dealer informed FIJ that the SUVs cost between N85 and N120 million each on average.
FIJ found that Idris’ expenditure of N85 million on each of the vehicles given to the 24 lawmakers would total N2.04 billion. It would take an average government worker earning the N30,000 minimum wage 236 years to afford one of the SUVs.
Additionally, the same amount could pay 68,000 state government workers the N30,000 minimum wage. It could also purchase rice for 51,000 households, providing half a bag of rice to each, or provide a bag of rice to 25,500 households.
