Minister David Umahi Readies for House of Representatives Probe into Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Project
Senator David Umahi, Nigeria’s Minister of Works, has affirmed his preparedness to address the inquiry by the House of Representatives regarding the controversial N15 trillion Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project. Umahi disclosed his intention to broadcast the investigative hearing live, ensuring transparency and allowing the Nigerian public to witness the proceedings directly.
This decision comes in the wake of the House’s resolution to investigate the infrastructure project, prompted by allegations of procedural irregularities and lack of competitive bidding. The motion for this probe was raised during a plenary session by Austin Achado, representing the Gwer East/Gwer West Federal Constituency of Benue State.
In an interview with Punch Newspaper, Umahi defended the project’s integrity, asserting that all necessary approvals were obtained and due process was followed. He addressed concerns regarding transparency in financial arrangements and contractor selection, dismissing accusations of procedural lapses in securing the project’s loan.
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, spanning over 700 kilometers and aiming to connect Lagos to Calabar, has attracted significant national attention due to its potential impact on coastal economic activities. Originally conceived during former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, the project has undergone revisions and changes in funding models over successive governments.
Umahi emphasized the expansion of the project from a four-lane to a ten-lane highway by the current administration, significantly increasing both its scope and associated costs. He provided a detailed cost comparison per kilometer, justifying the project’s expenses based on its scale and promised infrastructure benefits.
Regarding compensation for affected properties, Mrs. Keisha Olukorede, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, revealed that nine out of eleven property owners had received compensation, with the remaining two pending due to incomplete documentation.
Umahi’s readiness to engage with the House of Representatives probe signals a commitment to transparency and accountability in the execution of Nigeria’s infrastructure project.
