This announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on Friday during an inspection of the electronic gates at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport’s new terminal in Abuja.
Tunji-Ojo mentioned that the home delivery service will not cover every location initially to prevent system overload and potential damage.
The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) will start home delivery in Lagos, Port Harcourt, Kano, and Abuja.
For Nigerians in the diaspora, the home delivery service will first be available in the United States and the United Kingdom, with preliminary testing to ensure its effectiveness.
The minister explained that the delay in implementing home delivery was due to the lack of data centers. The NIS had been relying on a private company’s data center, but a permanent solution was necessary.
“We have completed the whole solution but realized the need for our own data center upon assuming office. We were leveraging a private company’s data center, which we appreciate. However, creating a permanent solution is essential for maintaining data integrity and national security. We could have launched in February but needed to build our own data center to ensure data integrity and national security. It’s disgraceful that at 61 years old, the NIS, custodian of Nigeria’s biometric data, was not in control of this data,” said Tunji-Ojo.
He added that the new data center has been constructed, and the passport delivery issue has been resolved.
“It is about national security, and I assure you our data center is comparable to any in the world. We have built the data center, resolved the passport delivery solution, and completed the technology and tracking solution presentation. This ensures we do not create multiple lines of failure,” the minister said.
Additionally, the minister announced the completion of the electronic visa’s final presentation, which will reduce visa processing time from 72 hours to 48 hours.
“The passport automation process is almost complete,” he added.
This announcement follows nine months after the minister initially declared that home delivery of passports to Nigerians would commence by February 2024. In October, Tunji-Ojo stated that starting in February 2024, Nigerians could have their passports delivered to their homes, offices, or any location of their choice
