Minister Of Sports Condemns Libyan Treatment Of Nigerian Team, Outlines Government’s ResponseThe Minister of Sports Development, John Owan Enoh, has strongly condemned the actions of Libyan authorities after the Nigerian Super Eagles and their officials were held at Al Abaq Airport. This incident occurred when the Nigerian flight, originally bound for Benghazi, was unexpectedly redirected to a location over two hours away from its intended destination, just an hour before landing.

The sudden diversion caused significant distress for the Super Eagles, their officials, and support staff, who faced unnecessary delays and uncertainty. Enoh expressed his deep concern regarding the treatment of the Nigerian team, especially since they were in Libya for an international engagement.

“Such actions by the Libyan authorities are deeply disturbing and completely unacceptable,” he stated. “Holding our national team and officials hostage under any circumstances not only violates international sporting protocols but also undermines the principles of respect and hospitality that should be afforded to visiting teams. The Nigerian government will not tolerate any disrespect or mistreatment toward our players and officials.”

The Minister emphasized that the safety and welfare of the Super Eagles remain the government’s primary concern. He assured the public that the Ministry of Sports Development is collaborating with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other stakeholders to ensure the immediate and safe release of the team and their smooth passage to their destination.

“We are in close contact with the appropriate authorities and are making every effort to resolve this situation swiftly,” Enoh added. He urged the public to remain calm as diplomatic measures are undertaken to address the issue.

Furthermore, he called on the Libyan authorities to uphold international sporting relations and respect the fundamental rights of athletes traveling for official purposes. Enoh underscored that sports diplomacy plays a crucial role in promoting global unity and that such incidents should not be permitted to recur.

He concluded by expressing gratitude to the Nigerian public for their patience and support during this challenging time, reassuring them that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure the Super Eagles’ safe arrival at their destination.
