Audu emphasized the government’s commitment to not only restarting the light steel mill but also venturing into the production of essential military equipment at Ajaokuta. He highlighted his close collaboration with the Minister of Defence, Alhaji Badaru, and the Minister of Works, Senator Umahi, to facilitate the production of iron rods and military hardware capabilities.
The envisioned military hardware production encompasses a range of items, including helmets, bullets, vests, tank pads, rifles, and ammunition. Audu expressed confidence in the project’s success, stating that the Ajaokuta Steel Mill would gain the capacity to manufacture these critical military components.
To fund the revitalization efforts, Audu revealed that President Bola Tinubu has granted approval to raise funds locally. The estimated cost for the entire complex’s revamp is between two to five billion dollars, with the light steel mill section accounting for approximately N35 billion.
The proposed N35 billion investment is expected to enable the steel plant to produce 50,000 tons of iron rods initially, with the potential to scale up to 400,000 tons. Audu pointed out that a lack of political will has been a major hindrance to the Ajaokuta Steel Mill’s functioning for over 40 years, and he commended President Tinubu for establishing the Steel Ministry, recognizing its pivotal role in the country’s industrial revolution.
Audu acknowledged past challenges, attributing them to concessions where appointed entities lacked the requisite skills to execute the job effectively. With the renewed focus and financial support, the Minister of Steel Development is optimistic about ushering in a new era for Ajaokuta Steel Mill, marking a historic step towards harnessing Nigeria’s steel production capabilities.
