Bagudu also addressed misconceptions regarding the LGBTQ aspect of the agreement, asserting that the partnership aims to address region-specific issues in accordance with universally recognized international laws, conventions, and treaties applicable to all parties involved.

He highlighted the beneficial impact of a €1.7bn grant obtained through this partnership, which has supported the implementation of more than 5,000 micro projects in areas such as water, sanitation, energy, education, and health across 4,800 communities nationwide.

Bagudu further explained, “The partnership between Nigeria and the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) dates back to the Georgetown Agreement of 1975. This agreement brought together countries from Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific to establish a framework for trade and development cooperation with the European Union among its objectives.”

He added, “The recently finalized Partnership Agreement between the OACPS and the EU, initialled on April 15, 2021, includes a common Foundational Compact and three Regional Protocols (Africa-EU, Caribbean-EU, and Pacific-EU). Each Regional Protocol addresses the specific issues pertinent to its respective region, guided by universally accepted international laws, conventions, and treaties.”

In conclusion, Bagudu emphasized that the negotiations and outcomes of the Samoa agreement were grounded in international legal frameworks applicable to all participating parties.
