The Senate’s journey under Akpabio’s leadership, including rumored impeachment threats against him, reflects the intricate landscape of Nigerian politics.
The election that saw Senator Godswill Akpabio emerge as the Senate President was a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s political history.
The fiercely contested and tension-fraught election, which pitted Akpabio against Senator Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara Central, had the potential to divide the nation along ethnic and religious lines.
In a contest involving just 109 individuals, the alleged significant use of hard currency and the deployment of state machinery ultimately tilted the balance in favor of Senator Akpabio.
Akpabio, a two-term governor of Akwa Ibom State, former Senate minority leader, and a four-year tenure as a Minister in President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, appeared to possess the requisite experience to lead the Senate, given his extensive track record. However, he soon realized that leadership required more than just experience to stand out in the Senate.
One of his earliest and significant tasks was presiding over the debate on the proposed 40% increase in electricity tariffs.
The newly inaugurated senators engaged in a spirited debate on the matter, ultimately reaching a consensus that the federal authorities responsible for the policy should immediately suspend it.
However, this commendable decision triggered a wave of criticism directed at Akpabio and the 10th Senate when a video clip surfaced, showing the additional resolution that urged the electricity regulatory body to provide relief for underprivileged Nigerians.
This video quickly went viral, sparking mixed reactions and further shaping the Senate’s early days under Akpabio’s leadership.
