The Portuguese manager, whose contract runs until the end of the 2026/27 season, addressed his future following Benfica’s 1-1 draw with Casa Pia on Monday. Despite reports suggesting the club might be considering replacements, Mourinho made it clear he intends to remain.
He stated that although Jorge Mendes is his agent, the final decision rests with him, adding that he is committed to continuing his work at Benfica.
Mourinho, who returned to Portuguese football in September after more than 20 years abroad, admitted that the recent result has dealt a major blow to Benfica’s title ambitions. The club now trails league leaders FC Porto by seven points with only six games left, while Sporting sit second with a game in hand.
Reflecting on the situation, Mourinho acknowledged that the draw may have effectively ended their title hopes, noting that the team no longer controls its own fate—even in the race for second place.
He also expressed dissatisfaction with his side’s first-half performance, revealing that he had to address tactical issues during the break and remind some players of the reality of their situation. According to him, failing to win the match would all but end their chances in the title race.
