MTN And Several Others Secure Permits For Power Generation

In the first quarter of 2024, NERC granted nine new off-grid generation licenses, totaling 109.69 megawatts in capacity, along with three new trading licenses. Golden Penny Power Limited received approval to develop six off-grid gas plants across Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, and Cross River states, with a combined capacity of 100MW. MTN was permitted to establish four captive generation plants in Lagos State, totaling 15.94MW.

In addition to MTN, companies such as SweetCo Foods Limited, African Steel Mills Nigeria Limited, West African Ceramics Limited, Royal Engineered Stones Limited, and Armilo Plastics Limited were also granted permits for captive power generation. These permits are intended for entities to produce power for their own use rather than for resale.

NERC also issued licenses for mini-grid development to companies including Daybreak Power Solutions, TIS Renewable Energy Limited, Auro Nigeria Private Limited, Watts Exchange Limited, Centum Dopemu Energy Services Ltd, and DMD Electric Limited. These licenses are part of NERC’s ongoing efforts to promote renewable energy and expand mini-grid infrastructure.

The commission issued three mini-grid permits and two registration certificates during the reviewed period. Additionally, NERC certified six Meter Service Providers, including both installers and manufacturers of electric meters.

NERC also introduced one new regulation and 36 orders in the first quarter of 2024 to regulate the sector. These include updated tariffs, performance improvement plans, and measures to address non-compliance by distribution companies.
