Music Industry Betrayal: Shina Peters Exposes How His Label Exploited His Struggles For Fame
Veteran Afro-Juju legend Sir Shina Peters has revealed the bizarre publicity stunt orchestrated by his record label to rebuild his image after his controversial exit from Prince Adekunle’s band.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking on The Honest Bunch Podcast, the iconic singer recounted how he was publicly portrayed as a “madman” to attract sympathy and reshape public perception following the backlash that trailed his departure.
“When I left Prince Adekunle’s band, people protested, accusing me of abandoning my father because of money,” he recalled. “Then, the owner of my record label, Tunde Savage—who was also the marketing director of Daily Times—met with the weekend editor of Concord Newspapers and the Evening Times editor. They came up with an idea.”
According to the Ace crooner, the team devised a plan to make him appear mentally unstable in public as a sympathy tactic.
“The label boss told me to braid my hair and leave it for three days. He also asked me to tear some of my old clothes. On the third day, they loosened my hair but didn’t comb it. Then I wore the torn clothes, and they took me to Oyingbo Market to buy ewedu. As I was buying, they captured everything on camera—but I didn’t know their plan,” Peters narrated.
The act continued in Badagry, where construction giant Julius Berger was building an overhead bridge. “They told me to eat like a madman in public. It was all part of a gimmick to change people’s opinion about me. When I first left Prince Adekunle, people were angry. That stunt helped soften their hearts and brought me back into public favour,” he said.
