R&B singer Freddie Jackson, renowned for hit songs including “You Are My Lady” and “Rock Me Tonight,” has died at the age of 69.

Jackson’s family announced his death on Tuesday, October 6, revealing that the celebrated singer passed away the previous night. The family did not disclose the cause of death.

“It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved Freddie Jackson, who went home to rest last night,” the family said in a statement.

The family described Jackson as more than a legendary vocalist, portraying him as a kind and generous man who deeply loved his family, friends, fans and music.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Jackson built a remarkable career around romantic R&B and soul ballads that earned him a strong following, particularly among adult contemporary audiences.

Some of his best-known songs include “Rock Me Tonight,” “You Are My Lady,” “Tasty Love,” “Have You Ever Loved Somebody,” “Jam Tonight,” “He’ll Never Love You (Like I Do)” and “Do Me Again.”

Born Frederick Anthony Jackson in Harlem, New York, on October 2, 1956, the singer began his professional music career in the late 1970s as a member of the California-based funk band Mystic Merlin before launching his solo career.

Jackson achieved his major breakthrough in 1985 with the release of his album “Rock Me Tonight.” The title track and “You Are My Lady” became major R&B hits, while the album went platinum. His subsequent album, “Just Like the First Time,” also achieved platinum status.

The singer remained active in the music industry for decades, releasing projects including “Love Signals” in 2018 and “My First Love” in 2023. He also continued to perform live, with reports of concert appearances as recently as September 2026.

In 2024, Jackson publicly disclosed that he was battling kidney disease. However, his family did not indicate whether the condition was connected to his death.

Following his passing, Jackson’s family expressed gratitude to fans who supported the singer throughout his decades-long career.

“To everyone who ever sang along, danced, or felt something when Freddie took the stage: thank you. You were family to him, and he carried your love with him always,” the family stated.

The family asked fans to keep Jackson’s relatives, friends and loved ones in their prayers, while noting that details of his funeral arrangements and plans to honour his legacy would be announced at a later date.

“Rest in peace, Freddie. Your legacy and your voice will live on forever,” the family added.
