In a statement released on Thursday, Fagbemi emphasized the statutory authority vested in the EFCC, stating that the commission has the power to summon individuals for questioning, irrespective of their status.

Despite facing N80 billion money laundering charges, Bello failed to appear before the Federal High Court in Abuja as scheduled, where he was to enter his plea.

Earlier attempts by EFCC operatives to execute a court-ordered arrest at Bello’s residence in Wuse Zone 4, Abuja, were met with staunch resistance from police personnel guarding the premises. The situation escalated when the current Governor of Kogi State, Usman Ododo, intervened, reportedly aiding Bello’s departure from the scene in his official vehicle.

Expressing dismay over Bello’s defiance, AGF Fagbemi condemned the obstruction of justice witnessed during the standoff between EFCC and police personnel. He urged individuals summoned by law enforcement agencies to comply with such invitations, highlighting the importance of upholding the rule of law.

Following Thursday’s events, the EFCC officially declared Bello wanted, soliciting assistance from the public in locating him.

During the court proceedings, EFCC’s prosecuting counsel, Kemi Pinheiro, lamented the interference encountered by EFCC operatives during their attempt to apprehend Bello. Pinheiro stressed the agency’s commitment to professionalism in handling the situation, averting potential violence.

In response to Bello’s absence in court, Pinheiro hinted at the possibility of involving the military to ensure his presence, citing the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015.

However, Bello’s legal counsel, Abdulwahab Muhammed, argued that his client had not violated any court orders, citing a restraining order issued by a High Court in Lokoja and an ongoing appeal at the Court of Appeal in Abuja.

The EFCC’s pursuit of Bello follows years of investigation into him and his associates, culminating in the current N80 billion money laundering charges involving Bello, his nephew Ali Bello, Dauda Suleiman, and Abdulsalam Hudu.

“AGF, Lateef Fagbemi SAN condemns the obstruction of EFCC from arresting Yahaya Bello by lawless Kogi governor, Ododo; describes it as a situation where people who should be obeying the law are breaking it. My respect for AGF Fagbemi will always be intact”, Deji Adeyanju stated via his X handle.
