According to the Army, the officer actually died following a brief illness.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 6 Brigade Nigerian Army, Lieutenant Umar Muhammad, described the social media reports as false, misleading, and inaccurate.

He clarified:

“For the avoidance of doubt, Lieutenant Colonel Emmanuel Gabriel Okoye passed away on 13 June 2026 after a brief illness. His death was neither the result of a bandit attack nor any operational incident, as falsely insinuated in some social media reports.”

The Army emphasized that the circumstances surrounding his death had already been officially communicated through proper channels.

It expressed concern over the spread of unverified information, noting that such claims were both insensitive and misleading.

Army warns against speculation

The military warned that spreading false narratives about the death of personnel could cause unnecessary fear among serving officers, their families, and the general public.

It also criticized individuals and media platforms for circulating unconfirmed reports without relying on official sources.

The statement further urged members of the public and journalists to disregard claims linking the officer’s death to banditry, stressing the importance of verifying information before publication.

Reaffirming its commitment to transparency and professionalism, the Army advised that all enquiries regarding military personnel or operations should be directed to official communication channels.

It described the late Lieutenant Colonel Okoye as a dedicated and professional officer who served the nation with honour, noting that the Army continues to mourn his passing and pray for the repose of his soul.
