N.3m Theft Allegations Land Hotel Manager In Remand

The Chief Magistrate Court in Yaba, presided over by Magistrate O.Y. Adefope, remanded 30-year-old hotel manager GodsWill Akpan on Friday for allegedly embezzling N360,000 entrusted to him.

Akpan faces a charge of theft for purportedly misappropriating N360,000 while serving as manager at Switch Guest House, owned by Owolabi Daniel.

According to reports from PUNCH Metro, Akpan was entrusted with remitting N180,000 weekly from guest house sales. Instead, he allegedly failed to deposit sales for two weeks and disappeared with N360,000. Efforts to contact him were unsuccessful.

Following a report to the police, Akpan was apprehended and interrogated, where he reportedly admitted to the accusations.

Prosecutor Haruna Magaji informed the court that the alleged offence occurred on April 8, 2024, violating Section 287 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2015. Magaji further stated there was evidence that Akpan handled funds from guests exceeding his weekly remittance obligations.

Akpan pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Magistrate Adefope set bail at N500,000 with two sureties required. The case was adjourned until July 17, 2024, for further proceedings, with Akpan to remain in police custody until bail conditions are met.
