During a press conference in Benin, Edo State, earlier today, NABTEB’s acting Registrar, Dr. Nnasia Ndareke Asanga, provided an update on the June/July 2024 examinations. He reported that out of the 67,751 candidates who participated, 44,000 scored five credits or more, including Mathematics and English Language.

Asanga noted that this figure represents 65.35 percent of all candidates who sat for the exams. Additionally, he revealed that 62,235 candidates, or 92.42 percent of the total, obtained five credits and above, regardless of their performance in English Language and Mathematics.

A total of 67,751 candidates registered for the examinations held in 1,708 centers nationwide. Asanga pointed out that the perception of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs by industries, enterprises, and communities, along with a lack of funding and support, is adversely affecting technical education in the country.

He stated, “Appropriate legislation, capacity building for technical education teachers, adequate funding, better equipment, and the establishment of more technical colleges would greatly enhance TVET and other technical education programs.

“TVET has the potential to bridge the gap between education and unemployment, which is crucial in today’s innovation-driven economy.”

Asanga also mentioned that this year’s results indicated a decline in candidate performance compared to 2023, with 349 candidates reported for examination malpractice.

He expressed concern that examination malpractice not only undermines the trust of educators and policymakers but also deprives students of the opportunity to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and lifelong learning skills.

“NABTEB is mandated to conduct examinations and perform skill-based assessments, leading to the award of Business, Vocational, and Technical Certificates at both Ordinary and Advanced levels,” he concluded.
