The Nigerian Air Force clarified that a Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), not an aircraft, crashed in Kaduna on Monday, prompting an immediate investigation into the incident.
Initial reports had erroneously mentioned a helicopter accident, but the NAF spokesperson, AVM Edward Gabkwet, clarified in a statement that the UAV crashed near Rumji Village, approximately 15 kilometers from its base. Fortunately, as the UAV was unmanned, there were no casualties.
Gabkwet assured the public that the incident would not disrupt ongoing operations, emphasizing that a preliminary investigation was already underway to determine the cause of the mishap.
Local residents, upon hearing the crash around 5 am, gathered at the scene to offer assistance. They were relieved to find the pilot unharmed. Military personnel swiftly secured the area to conduct a thorough investigation, ensuring the safety of nearby villagers.
This incident marks the first reported UAV crash in Nigeria, contrasting with previous military air accidents, including those involving manned aircraft like the Super Mushshak trainer and MI-35P helicopter, which caused injuries and fatalities in recent years.
