In a statement issued in Abuja, NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, urged Nigerians to exercise caution, especially during the festive season when the consumption of fake drinks and foods typically rises. She stressed the importance of avoiding counterfeit products, particularly alcoholic beverages, which are often falsified during the holidays.

Prof. Adeyeye also cautioned Nigerians against purchasing medicines from informal street vendors or roadside drugstores. She emphasized that many of these vendors operate with poor storage conditions, and the medications they sell are often counterfeit or unsafe.

“Do not buy medicines from corner shops, kiosks, or street hawkers. Always purchase from licensed pharmacies,” she advised. “While medicines may be more expensive at legitimate stores, remember that the lower cost of street-bought drugs can lead to serious health consequences, including poisoning or even death.”

The NAFDAC DG further recommended that consumers carefully examine labels on food and drink products to ensure they bear the agency’s official registration number and expiry date, warning that any product lacking these details should be avoided.

Prof. Adeyeye concluded by urging Nigerians to remain vigilant and prioritize their health by avoiding the temptation of cheap but potentially dangerous counterfeit goods.
