In a widely circulated video, Oba Sowemimo fashioned N1000 notes into a garland and placed it around the neck of the renowned Fuji musician, Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, during the celebration of his wife’s birthday anniversary.
This action triggered a wave of public outcry on social media, with many Nigerians expressing disapproval of the monarch’s behavior. Some highlighted the ongoing scarcity of the Naira, criticizing the monarch for his perceived disrespect towards the national currency.
Responding to the controversy, the federal government, through the National Orientation Agency (NOA), sent a letter to the monarch on January 16, cautioning him about the consequences of his actions and warning of potential imprisonment for the act of Naira abuse.
In the letter addressed to Oba Sowemimo, the Director General of NOA, Lanre Issa-Onilu, emphasized the agency’s mandate to preserve and promote the integrity of national symbols. He urged traditional rulers to consider it their duty to uphold these symbols as part of the national culture, citing Section 21 (3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007, which stipulates penalties for the abuse and defacing of the Naira.
In response to the warning, Oba Sowemimo issued an apology and pledged to refrain from such actions in the future. He acknowledged being carried away by the excitement of his wife’s birthday celebration, expressing regret for any offense caused.
The monarch stated, “I don’t want to argue or discuss that matter with anybody again. If I did anything wrong, I’m sorry. There are more than 1,000 videos of people spraying money, even marching on the Naira notes. I know they singled me out because I’m a royal father, and I’ve apologized because of my position. It will not happen again. I’m not pleased with the way people are talking about me on social media. I was just carried away with the celebration of my wife. For 13 years, I’ve never hosted any party, so I was so excited that I wanted to make the party unforgettable. But I’m genuinely sorry.
