Naira Faces Pressure Amidst Surge In Parallel Market Dollar Rates

Edison Ehie, Chief of Staff to the suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, has filed a ₦2 billion libel suit against former Head of Service George Nwaeke and Channels Incorporated Limited at the Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The lawsuit stems from comments made by Nwaeke during a Channels Television broadcast, in which he allegedly accused Ehie of orchestrating the fire that razed the Rivers State House of Assembly complex, among other claims.
Ehie asserts that the allegations, aired on March 29, 2025, were entirely false and without evidence, causing severe damage to his reputation and public image.
According to the suit, the defamatory statements sparked public scandal and portrayed Ehie in a negative light, lowering his standing in the eyes of society. He described the broadcast as malicious and defamatory, stating it harmed his credit, integrity, and character.
Ehie is demanding ₦2 billion in general damages for the reputational harm caused. He is also seeking a perpetual injunction to stop the defendants and their associates from making further defamatory statements.
Additionally, he is asking the court to compel the defendants to issue a public retraction and apology, to be aired on Channels Television and published in two widely circulated national newspapers.
Justice Jumbo Stephens, presiding over the matter, has granted an order of substituted service, allowing the court documents to be served on Nwaeke by posting them at his residence in Old GRA, Port Harcourt. The court also ordered the originating processes to be published in a national newspaper that circulates in Abuja and across the country.
The matter has been adjourned until April 10, 2025, for proof of service.
