In a statement released by NANS National President, Pedro Obi, the apex student body stressed that such measures are essential not only for the success of the scheme but also for its sustainability.

“To ensure the success and integrity of the student loan scheme, we urge the Federal government to prioritize transparency and accountability in the disbursement of the loans,” Obi stated. “This must be achieved by engaging all relevant stakeholders.”

NANS further called for the appointment of individuals from various backgrounds, including academia, finance, and civil society, to ensure a fair and balanced administration of the scheme.

The statement also underscored the need for transparent and effective monitoring mechanisms to track the disbursement process and ensure proper allocation of funds. Regular audits, public reporting, and feedback channels for students to report issues or irregularities were recommended to maintain accountability.

While commending President Bola Tinubu’s administration for initiating the student loan scheme, NANS urged the government to involve all relevant stakeholders in its implementation.

The association highlighted the potential of the scheme to alleviate financial burdens faced by many students and their families, as well as to reduce the mass exodus of Nigerian students seeking education abroad.

NANS emphasized the importance of making the loan scheme inclusive and accessible to all eligible students, regardless of their socio-economic background. Clear criteria for loan eligibility and repayment terms were deemed crucial to avoid ambiguity or discrimination.

NANS expressed full support for the government’s efforts and anticipated positive impacts on educational opportunities and Nigeria’s socio-economic development.

Additionally, NANS called for urgent action regarding the reported deportation of Nigerian students from Teesside University in the UK for defaulting on their school fees.

The statement highlighted Tinubu’s signing of the Access to Higher Education Act, 2023 into law on June 12, 2023, enabling indigent students to access interest-free loans for their educational pursuits in any Nigerian tertiary institution
