In a significant move to enhance public health across its 13 Local Government Areas, the Nasarawa State Government, in collaboration with the Federal Medical Centre, Keffi, has initiated a comprehensive medical outreach program. Highlighting the severity of hepatitis cases in Doma LGA, which have resulted in numerous fatalities, Dr. Akabe emphasized the critical need for immediate intervention. The partnership with the Federal Medical Centre aims not only to conduct free hepatitis testing but also to provide extensive healthcare services to rural communities statewide.
Dr. Akabe urged residents to participate actively in the testing programs available at government healthcare facilities across the state. He cautioned against unsafe practices such as using unsterilized sharp objects and sharing needles, stressing their role in hepatitis transmission.
Dr. Yahaya Adamu, representing the Chief Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre, Keffi, affirmed the hospital’s commitment to supporting the health and well-being of Nasarawa State residents. Meanwhile, Dr. Gaza Gwamna, the State Commissioner for Health, commended federal support in combating infectious diseases and outlined the outreach’s goal of reaching 6,000 individuals per LGA.
The Andoma of Doma, HRH Aliyu Ogah, expressed gratitude on behalf of beneficiaries for the government’s healthcare initiative, foreseeing improved community health outcomes. The event, attended by top officials and dignitaries, concluded with the symbolic presentation of a Volkswagen Sharon Bus to the medical team, underscoring the government’s dedication to healthcare provision.
In a proactive step in March 2023, Nasarawa State allocated N100 million toward hepatitis control efforts, underscoring its commitment to curbing the virus’s spread across all localities. Governor Abdullahi Sule emphasized this commitment during the launch of the Hepatitis C Virus Self-Testing Implementation program in Lafia, setting the stage for continued health advancement initiatives in the state.
