Senator Natasha, representing Kogi Central, was suspended for six months after she accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment but was deemed to have failed in substantiating her claims.

Challenging her suspension, Natasha approached the Abuja Federal High Court, where Justice Binta Nyako ruled on Friday that the Senate’s decision was excessive and unconstitutional. The judge noted that the suspension unfairly deprived Natasha’s constituents of their right to representation.

In his reaction, Idam described the judgment as a critical lifeline for Nigeria’s democracy.

In a statement he personally signed, Idam said:

“The Federal High Court’s ruling, which declared Senator Natasha’s suspension illegal and unconstitutional, stands as a beacon of hope for our endangered democracy. The court has once again acted as a deus ex machina, stepping in to defend democratic institutions from collapse.”

He added:

“Without this judgment, how would Natasha — a duly elected representative — have returned to the Senate under such vindictive and autocratic leadership? Would she have had to kneel with her husband and offer a keg of palm wine to beg Akpabio for reinstatement, even though her name isn’t Fubara?”

Idam stressed that the ruling goes beyond Natasha as an individual, saying it marks the end of arbitrary suspensions of elected officials in the National Assembly and signals a turning point against the misuse of legislative power.

He also took a swipe at Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, accusing him of lacking the courage to challenge tyranny in court.

“This is the boldness Fubara lacked. Instead of defending Nigeria’s stifled democracy, he chose to negotiate his bruised interests on bended knees,” Idam said.

Finally, Idam called on Nigerians to hold the Senate accountable, warning its leadership that Natasha is not returning as a “prodigal daughter” whose welcome is merely symbolic. He insisted she must be reinstated fully and granted all the rights, benefits, and privileges that were wrongfully taken from her.
