The Federal Government has announced that renaming the University of Maiduguri after the late former President Muhammadu Buhari is a tribute to his steadfast dedication to education and national progress.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press at the Federal Ministry of Education.

According to the statement, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the renaming during a special session of the expanded Federal Executive Council (FEC), held in honour of the late leader. During the session, President Tinubu described Buhari as a patriotic statesman whose administration focused on national security, institutional reforms, economic recovery, and the fight against corruption.

The session was attended by top government officials, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, state governors, ministers, and other dignitaries. Yusuf Buhari, the late president’s son, delivered a tribute on behalf of the family.

The Ministry of Education said the new name — Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri — symbolises Buhari’s enduring contributions to human capital development and his legacy of service.

The statement read:
“The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, CON, on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Education and the entire Nigerian education sector, deeply appreciates President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his statesmanlike decision to immortalise the late President Muhammadu Buhari by renaming the University of Maiduguri.”

It added that the renaming recognises Buhari’s impact through key initiatives such as the Anchor Borrowers’ Programme, the Treasury Single Account (TSA), the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP), and various social investment programmes.

Dr. Alausa praised the gesture as not only a mark of respect but also a reaffirmation of President Tinubu’s commitment to education as a pillar of national development.

“This act of honour,” the statement concluded, “underscores the administration’s belief in education as the foundation for sustainable growth and a strong national identity. The Ministry pledges to uphold the values of service, integrity, and excellence championed by both President Buhari and President Tinubu.”
