The collective cost of these SUVs for the 109 Senators and 360 members of the House of Representatives is estimated at N57.6 billion.

This development has sparked widespread public indignation, particularly given the country’s substantial debt burden and the prevailing high poverty rates among Nigerians.

According to Akin Rotimi, the spokesman for the House of Representatives, members of the House have commenced the process of receiving the vehicles.

Notably, priority was afforded to female parliamentarians, individuals with disabilities, and elderly members.

Rotimi clarified that only legislators who have fully resolved their outstanding court cases will be eligible to receive the vehicles. He also stated that the final batch of SUVs for lawmakers is expected to arrive before December.

A member of the House of Representatives, speaking anonymously, emphasized that the management places a strong emphasis on ensuring that the vehicles are legitimately utilized for legislative purposes.

The management has issued a directive to members, explicitly prohibiting the sale of any of the vehicles, as they are considered the property of the National Assembly.

The anonymous member revealed, “This current Assembly is very focused on adhering to the right procedures. In previous assemblies, individuals would collect their vehicles and subsequently sell them, but the Speaker has taken a firm stance against such practices.

The spokesperson was tasked with issuing an internal statement to members, and it is made abundantly clear that no member is allowed to sell their vehicles, as they are the property of the National Assembly.

Beyond this circular, the management is closely monitoring the situation, with a specific emphasis on justifying the procurement, as the vehicles were procured to provide lawmakers with a certain level of autonomy from the executive.”
