The tripartite committee on the new national minimum wage (NNMW) is reconvening today after a sudden adjournment following last Tuesday’s meeting, where labour representatives walked out, accusing government negotiators of not taking the process seriously.
There are allegations that state governors are colluding against the Federal Government to impede the negotiations.
On Tuesday, Labour’s negotiating team left the committee meeting for the second time in two weeks after the Federal Government increased its offer slightly to N60,000 from the N57,000 proposed on May 22.
Representatives from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) had previously walked out on May 15 after the government offered N48,000 and the Organised Private Sector (OPS) offered N54,000, both falling short of Labour’s demand of N615,000.
