NBA President Osigwe Announces Citizen Liberties Committee, Includes Adeyanju, Effiong In Key Roles

The announcement was made after Osigwe’s inaugural speech at the NBA conference in Lagos. Osigwe, who succeeded Yakubu Maikyau, took the oath of office on Thursday, marking the beginning of his leadership of the prestigious legal body. Elected in July 2024, Osigwe aims to build on the work of his predecessor, whose term concluded at the conference.

In his address, Osigwe emphasized his commitment to ensuring the NBA remains a strong voice in Nigeria’s democratic process, vowing to hold both federal and state governments accountable. “The rule of law must be upheld, and the rights of Nigerians must be protected,” he declared.

To enhance the protection of citizens’ rights, Osigwe established the Citizens’ Liberties Committee, appointing Nuhu Egya as Chairman, Malachy Ugwumadu as Alternate Chair, and including Adeyanju, Effiong, and Opara as members. The committee will work with NBA branches to engage with Chief Judges across states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). It is tasked with overseeing monthly inspections of police stations and detention facilities by Magistrates and Judges, as mandated by the Administration of Criminal Justice Act.

The committee will also direct the Human Rights Committees of each NBA branch to accompany Chief Magistrates and Judges on these inspections, aiming to promote transparency and accountability within the justice system. Citizens will be encouraged to participate in monitoring these facilities and report their findings through the Human Rights Committees.

Adeyanju expressed his gratitude for the appointment, stating, “I am honored to be appointed to the Citizens’ Liberties Committee and appreciate the trust placed in me by President Osigwe. This committee is a crucial step toward reinforcing the protection of human rights and civil liberties in Nigeria.”

He emphasized the importance of this initiative in addressing concerns about citizens’ rights and called on fellow legal professionals to support the fight for justice and equality. “Collaborative efforts are essential for meaningful change,” Adeyanju added, pledging to work diligently with other committee members to address pressing issues and promote a culture of human rights across the nation.
