NBA Urges Judges To Rebuild Public Trust To Justify Pay Increase

Signed by President Bola Tinubu on August 9, 2024, the Act represents a significant advancement toward ensuring judicial independence and integrity. Maikyau emphasized that this development is crucial for maintaining national stability and called on the judiciary to restore public trust to justify the improved remuneration.

“The judiciary’s role is vital to national stability, and high public confidence is essential for peaceful co-existence, economic growth, and prosperity,” Maikyau said in a statement on Wednesday. He also expressed appreciation to the 10th National Assembly and Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), for their support in expediting the bill’s passage.

Despite the progress, Maikyau urged further reforms, including the inclusion of magistrates in the definition of judicial officers in the ongoing constitutional review. He also called for enhanced funding and support for magistrates and other judiciary staff to improve grassroots justice delivery.

Reflecting on his tenure, which concludes on August 29, 2024, Maikyau highlighted the NBA’s efforts in advocating for judicial reform, including a justice sector summit held in April 2024. He urged the judiciary to make a concerted effort to regain public trust and expressed confidence in Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, the incoming Chief Justice of Nigeria, to lead the judiciary effectively through this critical period.
