NCoS spokesperson Umar Abubakar confirmed that the preparations for the audit are nearing completion. The process will involve deploying personnel and resources to various correctional facilities across the country.
“The audit is being spearheaded by Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo,” Abubakar said. “We are finalizing the planning phase and will soon dispatch our teams to carry out the audit.”
The audit will target several critical areas, including assessing inmates with expired sentences and reviewing cases for potential clemency. It will also examine judicial actions such as bail and acquittal to ensure inmates are released according to their legal status.
Abubakar explained, “Inmates are released once their sentences are completed or through clemency granted by the Executive. We make recommendations to the government on inmates who are eligible for pardon or clemency, and we also address judicial reviews such as bail and acquittals.”
In addition to the headcount, the government is pursuing other measures to reduce prison congestion. These include implementing non-custodial sanctions like community service and probation, and plans to expand and modernize correctional facilities.
