Speaking on Channels Television, Ndume acknowledged that politicians engage in corruption but emphasized that they often share the spoils with the public. He argued that compared to other forms of corruption, the scale of politicians’ wrongdoing is relatively small.
Ndume elaborated, stating, “Our corruption is people-driven. If you steal, you’re compelled to share with the people, or else you risk losing reelection. There’s no justification for stealing.” Drawing from his experience in the National Assembly, he maintained that his remarks were candid, suggesting conditional support for the death penalty in cases of extreme corruption, particularly embezzlement of massive sums.
However, Ndume expressed unequivocal support for capital punishment for drug traffickers, citing the grave consequences of their actions. He emphasized the lethal impact of drugs on individuals and society, advocating for stringent measures to combat drug-related crimes.
Ndume’s comments underscore the complexities surrounding corruption and the divergent perspectives on appropriate deterrents for different offenses.
