According to Ndume, a soldier’s daily allowance is a meager N1,200, and the Duty Tour Allowance (DTA) is only N2000. He emphasized that the last salary increment for security agents occurred in 2008. Ndume called on the Federal Government to urgently revisit the stipends and salaries of active military personnel.
Highlighting the challenges faced by security recruits, Ndume questioned the feasibility of expecting dedication and sacrifice from individuals receiving insufficient pay. He pointed out that recruits earning less than N50,000 face difficulties supporting themselves and their families.
The Borno lawmaker stressed the necessity for the government to address these issues promptly. He urged a salary review for armed forces, emphasizing that the current salaries are inadequate and have not been adjusted since 2008. Additionally, Ndume recommended increasing the recruitment of security operatives, particularly to address the manpower deficit in the Nigerian Police Force and the Army.
In addressing the broader concerns, Ndume called on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to prioritize providing adequate equipment for the military. He emphasized that enhancing military capabilities is crucial for addressing national security threats and boosting the morale of security personnel.
In conclusion, Ndume urged the government to take immediate action in reviewing salaries, recruiting more security personnel, and ensuring the provision of necessary equipment to enhance the effectiveness of Nigeria’s security agencies.
