The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has raised concerns over President Bola Tinubu’s recent security appointments, criticizing what they see as a disproportionate influence of individuals from the South-West. The NEF argues that this trend could lead to increased sectionalism within the country.
The criticism follows the appointment of Adeola Ajayi as Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) and Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the Chief Justice of Nigeria. NEF spokesperson Abdul-Azeez Suleiman highlighted a pattern of appointments favoring the South-West, referencing earlier appointments like Taoreed Lagbaja as Chief of Army Staff, Bashir Adeniyi as Comptroller-General of Customs, and Kayode Egbetokun as Inspector-General of Police.
The forum, which had previously expressed regret for backing Tinubu in the 2023 elections, fears that such actions could undermine national unity by sidelining other regions. The NEF called for greater inclusivity in government appointments, warning that continued regional favoritism could weaken the country’s cohesion.
This criticism is echoed across social media, where many have accused Tinubu of favoring his ethnic group in key positions since assuming office. The NEF has indicated that it will prioritize a candidate who promotes inclusivity and aligns with the interests of all regions in the 2027 elections.
Suleiman emphasized the importance of inclusivity in Nigeria’s governance, stating that the country’s unity relies on the representation of its diverse ethnic groups. He warned that continued favoritism could fuel discontent and exacerbate regional tensions, threatening national stability. Suleiman urged the government to adopt a more balanced approach to appointments, focusing on merit rather than regional affiliations to ensure that all regions feel equally represented and valued.
