NERC Directs DisCos To Refund Overcharged Customers Before April 11

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has mandated electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to reimburse customers who were incorrectly billed with the new tariff.

According to a statement issued on Saturday, April 6, by Abba Terab, the Deputy General Manager of NERC responsible for market competition and rates, customers are to receive refunds via energy tokens no later than April 11. Additionally, DisCos are required to submit evidence of compliance to the commission by April 12.

The directive outlined several key points:

  • DisCos must ensure that only the newly approved Band A feeders listed in their April 2024 supplementary orders are classified as Band A for vending to prepaid customers and billing for postpaid customers.
  • DisCos are obligated to promptly publish on their websites the schedule of approved Band A feeders affected by the rate review.
  • DisCos are mandated to establish a portal on their websites by April 10, 2024, allowing customers to verify their current bands by entering their meter or account numbers.
  • Customers erroneously billed at the new rate should be refunded through energy tokens no later than Thursday, April 11, 2024, with evidence of compliance filed with the Commission by April 12, 2024.
  • The Commission will oversee compliance with the outlined requirements and will continue to offer support to all stakeholders as needed.

The directive aims to rectify any discrepancies in billing and ensure fair treatment of consumers in the electricity market.
