In a dramatic turn of events, Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of the Federal High Court in Lagos has delivered a staggering blow to the once-revered former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Godwin Emefiele. On Wednesday, June 5th, the court granted an order of interim forfeiture of properties worth a jaw-dropping N11,140,000,000.00 allegedly tied to Emefiele.

The courtroom was gripped with tension as Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Rotimi Oyedepo, leading Bilkisu Buhari-Bala and Chineye Okezie, passionately argued the motion ex parte on behalf of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Their persuasive plea resulted in the court decreeing the interim forfeiture of the opulent properties to the Federal Government.

Oyedepo wasted no time in painting a damning picture of Emefiele, alleging that the properties were acquired through fraudulent means, presumably by proxy. The portfolio of properties, nestled in the most affluent districts of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, symbolized the extravagant lifestyle allegedly funded by ill-gotten gains.

Adding fuel to the fire, the EFCC implicated three CBN staff—Obayemi Oluwaseun Teben, Akomolafe Adebayo, and Olubunmi Makinde—as Emefiele’s cohorts. It’s alleged that they exploited their positions within the CBN to facilitate shady deals, exchanging favors for kickbacks from various companies.

In a bold move, Justice Aneke mandated the EFCC to broadcast the forfeiture order in newspapers, inviting interested parties to challenge the impending confiscation.

As the legal saga unfolds, all eyes are on the 21st of June, when the court will reconvene to deliberate on the motion for final forfeiture. Stay tuned as the courtroom drama escalates, revealing the full extent of Emefiele’s alleged misdeeds.
