Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, has disclosed that he received threats after boldly asserting that powerful Nigerians are connected to banditry linked with illegal mining in the country. During his address, Alake stated, “I did say categorically to the whole world that powerful Nigerians are behind the banditry associated with illegal miners in this country.” He clarified that his assertion was based on intelligence reports, highlighting the connivance across various societal strata.
Despite receiving threats for his outspoken stance, Alake affirmed the prevalence of the issue across different segments of society. He indicated that both high-profile and lesser-known individuals were involved in supporting banditry related to illegal mining.
Alake expressed the complexity of the problem, noting, “It is not an exclusive preserve of just a high hut. It cuts across the strata of the society. So, this is a societal problem.” He mentioned the adoption of both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies to combat these challenges, withholding specific details due to strategic considerations. Furthermore, Alake revealed the Federal Government’s collaboration with critical stakeholders at the state, local government, and host community levels to curtail the activities of illegal miners. He stressed the need for military involvement, citing instances where bandits, sponsored by influential figures, had access to funding and heavy weaponry, posing a threat even to ground forces.
Touching on the recent Ibadan explosion that resulted in casualties and property damage, Alake urged caution in making definitive statements until forensic analyses and investigations by various security agencies are complete. He emphasized the importance of relying on authentic and viable reports for informed government decisions.
