New National ID Card In The Works: FG To Roll Out Innovative Features For Payments And Social Connectivity

The National Identity Management Commission, on behalf of the Federal Government, is set to introduce an upgraded National Identity Card equipped with payment functionalities and social service provisions.

Developed in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigeria Inter-bank Settlement System, this innovative card will operate on AfriGO, a national domestic card scheme.

In a statement released by Kayode Adegoke, the Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, it was revealed that the enhanced national ID card, built upon verifiable National Identity features mandated by the NIMC Act No. 23 of 2007, will be available to all Nigerians and legal residents.

This initiative aims to address the need for physical identification, granting cardholders access to both governmental and private social services while promoting financial inclusion and citizen empowerment.

Only individuals registered with the National Identification Number will be eligible to apply for the card, ensuring authenticity and security. The card, compliant with ICAO standards, will serve as the country’s primary identity card and can also function as a debit or prepaid card when linked to preferred bank accounts.

Moreover, the card will facilitate access to various government intervention programs, such as microloans, agriculture subsidies, transportation benefits, and energy subsidies, among others.

NIMC emphasizes its commitment to protecting cardholders’ personal data in accordance with international standards on data security protocols, ensuring the confidentiality and safety of users’ information.
